BetaKit is a Canadian digital media publication focused on the country's startup and technology sectors. Headquartered in Toronto, it is widely regarded as the "publication of record" for the Canadian technology industry and venture capital ecosystem.[1]
History
Founded in 2012 by Sarah Prevette and Erin Bury, BetaKit was initially owned by Postmedia Network before being acquired by MobileSyrup founder Ian Hardy in 2013.[2] In 2016, it was spun out as an independent entity, BetaKit Incorporated, led by Douglas Soltys as Editor-in-Chief.[3] In 2023, the publication formed a strategic partnership with the investment firm Good Future, established by former Shopify executives Satish Kanwar and Arati Sharma, to scale its operations while maintaining editorial independence.[4]
Impact and recognition
BetaKit is frequently cited as an authority on the Canadian tech ecosystem by national media outlets, including the CBC News, The Globe and Mail, and Financial Post.[5][6] In 2024, the publication received the Gold award for "General Excellence – Small Publication" from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW) Canada.[7] Its annual "Most Ambitious" list has been highlighted by academic leaders, including University of Toronto President Meric Gertler, for its role in identifying significant Canadian innovation leaders.[8]
