Beth P. Gesner is an American attorney who serves as Chief Magistrate for The United States District Court for the District of Maryland and formally served as both Chief the Southern Division of the United States Attorney’s office in Greenbelt, Maryland, and Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maryland.[1]

Career[edit]

After graduating from law school, Gesner served as a law clerk to the Honorable William B. Bryant. From October 1984 through March 1987, she worked as a litigation attorney for the law firm Hogan & Hartson. In April 1987, Judge Gesner was appointed Assistant to United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, where she would handle civil and criminal cases. Later in September 1992 to April 1993, she was detailed to the US Department of Justice, to work on the House of Representatives Bank Investigation as Assistant to the Special Counsel of Attorney General, Malcolm R. Wilkey. Gesner was selected in September 1993, as the Chief of the Southern Division of the United States Attorney’s office which had been newly created. While serving, Gesner became a recipient of the United States Attorney’s Office Outstanding Prosecution award. Beth Gesner then served from November 1996 till May 1997, as the Acting First Assistant United States Attorney. Gesner returned to her position as Chief of the Southern Division, and she remained there till May 1999, when she was appointed as a United States Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Judge Gesner is also a serving member of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. From 1990-1999, Beth Gesner served as an Adjunct Professor at the Columbus School of Law. There she taught Federal Criminal Litigation.[1][2][3]
