Bethan Laura Wood
Bethan Laura Wood (born in Shropshire,1983[1]) is an English designer and artist. Since completing her MA at London’s Royal College of Art in 2009,[2] Wood has taken part in residencies in Europe. Her work is characterised by a love of colour, geometry, visual metaphor[3] pattern and marquetry. Everyday objects can be re-contextualised, the work often focusing on pattern and colour, indicating their origins, production and past usage.[2]
Biography
Wood was diagnosed with dyslexia at sixth-form college.[4] She took an Art Foundation at Kingston before going on to study 3D Design at Brighton University,[5] she worked for a year on self-initiated projects, which she funded by working in cafes and bars, before studying at the Royal College of Art in 2007, tutored by Dutch designer Jurgen Bey and the Italian Martino Gamper.[6] Her personal style is described as, 'a riot of colour, texture, experimentation and unconventional beauty'.[7] She taught at L'Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL) in Switzerland, and has worked for French house Hermès, Italian brand Bitossi Ceramiche[8] and designed for the Milan-based rug company cc-Tapis.[9] She founded her studio in 2009[6] while still a student, called 'WOOD London'.[2] She was a Designer in Residence at the Design Museum, London. Her work has been exhibited at The V&A Museum of Childhood, Swiss Institute New York, Daelim Museum and MOT, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.[10] Wood has been commissioned by a variety of international partners to create works and installations, including, Abet Laminati, Moroso, Valextra, Perrier Jouët, Bitossi Ceramiche, Tory Burch, cc-tapis, Tolix , Rosenthal and Hermés. Her work has been exhibited in institutions such as V&A Museum of Childhood, Swiss Institute New York, Daelim Museum and MOT, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.[11] Wood was named in the Wallpaper* Power 200, which ranks her among the world’s pre-eminent design talent.[12]
