Bettina Ehrhardt

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

  • Comment: Although I think it is likely that Ehrhardt might qualify for a Wikipedia article, the draft needs more work before it can be accepted.
Please see WP:42 for more information on what kind of sources you need. At least three suitable sources are generally required; a suitable source meets all three criteria in WP:42. In particular, interviews with or sources written by the subject (or their friends, family, colleagues, etc) are not considered independent. Currently, many of your sources are either brief autobiographical blurbs, mentions of her name or works, or interviews. I recommend removing as many brief or passing mentions as possible, to cut down on the number of sources that don't help demonstrate notability. Presenting a few really good sources is much more likely to get your draft approved than many poor sources.
Every statement needs a source that verifies the information contained in that statement; currently many sources fail to verify the information. For example, Template:Tq is only for quoting in talk and project pages. Do not use it in actual articles. is sourced to this very brief blurb, which is firstly what Ehrhardt wants us to know about her work (and thus not independent) and secondly contains much less information than the statement it's meant to verify. Please go through the draft and make sure that every statement is verified.
Please also make sure to present all points of view, not just praise for Ehrhardt. For example, in relation to the film Eine Kielspur im Meer, the draft says Template:Tq is only for quoting in talk and project pages. Do not use it in actual articles. - this is true, but the review in question critiques Ehrhardt's work, which is not mentioned. We want to know what the reviews say, not just that they exist. Bettina Ehrhardt is a German documentary filmmaker, producer, journalist and author. Her work is particularly associated with documentaries about contemporary classical music and the musicians, composers and cultural institutions surrounding it, while also encompassing political biography, religion, ethnography, ecology and the visual arts. Alongside her authored documentaries, she has directed filmed opera and concert performances and other music films.[1][2]

A sustained theme in Ehrhardt's films is the attempt to translate twentieth- and twenty-first-century music into a visual language. Her subjects have included Luigi Nono, Claudio Abbado, Maurizio Pollini, Helmut Lachenmann, Pierre Boulez, Wolfgang Rihm, Kent Nagano, Zubin Mehta, Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin. In 2021, SWR Kultur devoted a 55-minute radio portrait to Ehrhardt and her approach to portraying contemporary music, focusing in particular on her films about Nono, Boulez, Lachenmann and Rihm.[1]

She lives and works in Munich and Berlin.[3][4]

Education

Ehrhardt attended Schule Schloss Salem as a boarding-school pupil. She later returned to the subject in the 1994 Süddeutsche Zeitung article Mit allen Abenteuern – Die Elite-Schule Salem demokratisiert sich, in which she reflected on her own experience of the school and changes in its culture.[5]

She studied French literature, linguistics and semiotics, philosophy, art history and film in Hamburg, Munich and Lyon.[6][7] At Université Lumière Lyon II, she received a Maîtrise de Lettres Modernes in French literature, as well as qualifications in linguistics, semiotics and cinema studies.[8][7]

Career

Ehrhardt has worked as an independent documentary filmmaker since the early 1990s and has produced many of her own films through BCE Films & More.[7] Her work developed along several parallel strands: portraits and essays about contemporary music, political and social documentaries, films concerned with religion and traditional knowledge, environmental films, and the direction of concerts and staged musical works.[2]

Alongside her filmmaking, Ehrhardt works as a freelance journalist and author.[9][7] Her writing for the Süddeutsche Zeitung includes cultural criticism, book and film reviews, interviews and travel reportage. Among her published pieces are reviews of books on Igor Stravinsky and contemporary literature, a 2010 interview with composer Wolfgang Rihm and the 2011 Malta travel feature Die Erben des Falken.[10][11][12][13]

Music documentaries

Ehrhardt's early work on music included Oslo Drumming – With Pulsation Lots of Space (1995), made with percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky, trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær and producer Manfred Eicher.[7]

A major early film was Eine Kielspur im Meer – Abbado, Nono, Pollini (2001; French title Un sillage sur la mer, English title A Trail on the Water), made with music journalist Wolfgang Schreiber. Rather than presenting separate biographies, the film traces the artistic and personal relationship that developed between conductor Claudio Abbado, composer Luigi Nono and pianist Maurizio Pollini from the 1960s until Nono's death. Their collaboration is placed within the political and cultural climate in which they worked and within the landscape of Venice, a recurring presence in the film.[14][15]

The film received the Jury Award at the Festival International du Film sur l'Art in Montréal in 2002.[16] It continued to circulate long after its original television life: BBC Music Magazine later reviewed its DVD release, and in 2023 the Fondazione Archivio Luigi Nono screened the film at the Luigi Nono Festival in Venice, with Ehrhardt presenting it in person.[17][14]

Ehrhardt returned to Nono in Intolleranza 2004, a documentary essay inspired by the composer's stage work Intolleranza 1960. The film connects Nono's music and political ideas with contemporary questions of migration, xenophobia, displacement, torture and resistance, combining material on the work with interviews and newly staged sequences.[18] It received several festival awards, including the Premio Asolo for best film on art, the Best Essay Film award at the Festival International du Film sur l'Art in Montréal and, at MusicDocFest in Rome, a Plaque of the President of the Italian Republic for a film on Italian music.[7][19]

In Wo ich noch nie war – Der Komponist Helmut Lachenmann (2006), Ehrhardt made a feature-length portrait of Helmut Lachenmann that centres not only on the composer's biography but on his understanding of sound and the act of listening.[20] Lachenmann remained a recurring figure in her work through concert recordings and later discussions of post-war and contemporary music.[1]

In 2010, Ehrhardt directed and co-produced Montréal symphonie, following Kent Nagano and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal during the orchestra's 75th season. The film follows the orchestra from Montréal and Paris to Inuit communities in northern Quebec and documents Nagano's attempts to bring classical and contemporary music outside conventional concert settings.[21] The film received the Best Canadian Film award at the 2010 Festival International du Film sur l'Art in Montréal.[21]

It also received substantial critical coverage in Germany. Christine Lemke-Matwey, writing in Der Tagesspiegel in a review also published by Die Zeit, praised Ehrhardt's sensory approach to the subject, while other reviews discussed her treatment of the relationship between Nagano's personality, the orchestra and its attempts to reach new audiences.[22][23][24][25]

Ehrhardt's subsequent films continued to explore composers from different generations of modern and contemporary music. Ich bin dein Labyrinth! – Wolfgang Rihm, Nietzsche, Dionysos approached Wolfgang Rihm through the creation of his opera Dionysos, while Klangmyriaden – Pierre Boulez' Pli selon pli (2011) focused on Boulez and his Mallarmé cycle Pli selon pli.[26] Klangmyriaden was screened at the Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels in Biarritz in 2012.[26] In 2013, she made Mönch und Dionysos – Der Komponist Bernd Alois Zimmermann, a portrait of Bernd Alois Zimmermann.[7]

Ehrhardt's 2016 documentary Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds: The Conductor Zubin Mehta followed Mehta through India, Israel, Italy and Germany and examined both his musical career and his relationship with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.[27][28] The film was shown at numerous international documentary and Jewish film festivals, including festivals in Atlanta, London, Miami, Boston and Silicon Valley.[27][29][30]

In 2018 it received the Building Bridges Jury Prize at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. The jury highlighted the film's presentation of music as a means of communication across cultural boundaries.[31] A later DVD edition was selected for the 2021 Quarterly Critics' Choice of the German Record Critics' Award in the Music Film category.[32]

Ehrhardt has also made films about the institutions and historical development of contemporary music. Wir fangen wieder ganz von vorne an – Neue Musik für ein Deutschland nach dem Krieg (2020) examines how new music developed in post-war Germany and the cultural conditions in which that generation of composers and institutions emerged.[33] For the centenary of the Donaueschinger Musiktage, she made the 90-minute Ohren auf! – 100 Jahre Donaueschinger Musiktage, tracing the festival's history and continuing role in contemporary music.[34]

Her work has also followed the artistic leadership of major European music festivals. In 2017 she portrayed pianist Markus Hinterhäuser during his first year as artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, observing the development of his programme through encounters with artists including Peter Sellars, Shirin Neshat, Teodor Currentzis, William Kentridge, Matthias Goerne and Igor Levit.[35] In 2026, Ehrhardt and conductor Graziella Contratto made Musik im Glück – Michael Haefliger, Festivalmacher, a documentary about Michael Haefliger and his long tenure at the Lucerne Festival.[36]

Political, cultural and environmental documentaries

A second strand of Ehrhardt's work focuses on political history, religion, cultural traditions and the relationship between people and their environment. Earlier films took her to the Sahara and Himalayas, including documentaries on Charles de Foucauld, the Tuareg of southern Algeria and the effects of modernisation in the Everest region.[2][7]

Strom für die Sherpas – Die Moderne am Mount Everest (2004) examined social and technological change in Nepal's Khumbu region through the introduction of locally generated electricity. The film received a Toura d'Or award in the information and documentary-film category.[37]

Ehrhardt later made several films in and around Ouidah, Benin, dealing with the history of slavery and the contemporary practice of Vodun. Die Sklavenstraße von Ouidah – Voodoo und Versöhnung in Westafrika approached the region through the continuing memory of the Atlantic slave trade, while the feature-length L'Élu du Vodoun – Celui à qui appartient la mer (German title Der Erwählte des Vodun – Der, dem das Meer gehört) follows the spiritual head of Vodun and the ritual world surrounding his role.[38][7] The latter received the Audience Award at the 2010 Quintessence International Film Festival in Ouidah.[39]

In 2012, Ehrhardt directed Wir wollten die Republik verändern – Der Liberale Gerhart Baum, a feature documentary on former German interior minister and civil-rights advocate Gerhart Baum. Rather than limiting the film to a chronological portrait, she uses Baum's life to revisit the political development of the Federal Republic after the Second World War, following him to Dresden, the Federal Constitutional Court and other places connected to his public and private history.[40]

Ehrhardt followed Baum's work over several years and combined extensive archival footage with testimony from political contemporaries. Interviewees included former foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Günter Verheugen, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger and others who had worked with or opposed Baum during different periods of his career.[41] The television version was first broadcast by WDR in October 2012, followed by a longer cinema version.[40] Ehrhardt's political portrait work also includes separate filmed conversations with Genscher and liberal politician Hildegard Hamm-Brücher.[7]

Environmental questions became increasingly prominent in her later work. Amazonia's Flying Rivers – No Forest, No Water (2018) explores the atmospheric phenomenon known as the Amazon's “flying rivers”: the movement of water vapour generated by the rainforest and its importance for rainfall and water supplies across South America. The film connects this natural system to deforestation, land use and efforts to protect the forest.[7]

Produced in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit and Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the film was premiered in connection with the 8th World Water Forum in Brasília in 2018. Later that year it was shown by the ministry in Bonn in connection with the COP24 climate conference, followed by a discussion involving Ehrhardt and representatives of GIZ, government and environmental organisations.[42][43]

In 2022, Ehrhardt co-directed and co-wrote Mama Irene: Healer of the Andes with Elisabeth Möhlmann. The documentary follows Peruvian healer Juana Irene Contreras Pumayalli and approaches healing not simply as an individual biography but through the transmission of Indigenous Andean knowledge, the relationship between people and the natural world, and the role of women in preserving traditional practices.[44]

The film circulated internationally, including at the Woodstock Film Festival, the Female Eye Film Festival and Indigenous and environmental film programmes.[45] At the 2022 Greenmotions Film Festival in Freiburg it shared the special-topic award Women – Activism – Environment.[46] The documentary was subsequently used in academic programmes concerned with Latin American and Indigenous cultures, including screenings at Rutgers University.[47]

Ehrhardt has also worked in the visual arts. Together with curator Corinna Thierolf she made Sculpting the Space (2022), documenting the realization at the Pinakothek der Moderne of five large sculptural studies conceived by American artist Fred Sandback.[48]

Performance and music-film direction

Alongside her documentaries, Ehrhardt has developed a separate body of work directing filmed concerts, staged operas and other musical performances. Her early recordings include Luigi Nono's ... sofferte onde serene ... with Maurizio Pollini at the Salzburg Festival and music from Prometeo with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea at the Verbier Festival and several works by Helmut Lachenmann at the Lucerne Festival.[7]

This performance work is closely connected to her documentary interest in how music can be translated into images. Her film direction of Boulez's Pli selon pli was used as a case study at the professional symposium The Look of Sound – Musik ins Bild gesetzt, where Ehrhardt discussed the relationship between musical structure, camera choice, performers and editing in creating a filmic experience of a concert.[6]

Her filmed version of Wolfgang Rihm's opera Dionysos likewise went beyond a static record of the stage production. Reviewing the release in The Guardian, Tim Ashley noted Ehrhardt's use of spaces beyond the stage itself, with the camera moving into the orchestra pit, backstage and through the theatre foyers.[49]

In 2018, Ehrhardt filmed Stephan Märki's reinterpretation of Bizet's Carmen at Konzert Theater Bern, conducted by Mario Venzago with the Berner Symphonieorchester. The production's mirrored stage design and its psychological interpretation of Carmen shaped Ehrhardt's approach to the camera, with the filmed version designed to move between the full stage picture and the singers' gestures and expressions.[50] The recording was commercially released by Arthaus Musik in 2021. The specialist journal das Orchester reviewed the DVD and specifically discussed aspects of Ehrhardt's image direction.[51]

During the cancellation of the 2020 Donaueschinger Musiktage because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ehrhardt filmed the final rehearsals of Elaine Mitchener's performance project On Being Human As Praxis. With the scheduled public premiere unable to take place, the resulting film became the principal record of the work in the form prepared for the festival.[52]

Ehrhardt has also worked outside classical music. In 2017 she directed and produced the music video for Alphaville's single Heartbreak City, released ahead of the album Strange Attractor.[53]

In 2024 she served as film director for a complete recording of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Staatstheater Cottbus, staged by Stephan Märki and conducted by Alexander Merzyn. The nearly four-hour production was subsequently released internationally on DVD.[54]
