Bettina Luescher
Bettina Luescher (born 1961) is a former German journalist and TV anchor. Since 2018 she is the Chief Spokesperson of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Berlin. From 2004 until 2006 she was WFPs Senior Spokesperson in Berlin, from 2006 - 2015 she was the Chief Spokesperson of the UN World Food Programme in New York City, then became the WFP Chief Spokesperson in Geneva.
Life
Bettina Luescher studied Political Sciences at the University of Muenster, during her studies she worked as a freelance reporter for the Münstersche Zeitung and for the WDR radio from 1981 to 1983. In 1983 she did an internship at WDR TV in Muenster. A Fulbright scholarship enabled her to study and receive an M.A. in Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 1983 and 1985. During that time, she gained her first television anchoring experience at an on-campus TV channel.[1]
CNN
In 1984 she interned at CNN in Atlanta, followed in 1985 by a permanent position as a video journalist at CNN Headline News in Atlanta, and a transferred to the then new CNN bureau in Frankfurt am Main in 1985. In 1989 she became a freelance anchor at the West 3 Aktuell and co-host of Aktuelle Stunde, both part of the German TV ARD network WDR, before returning to CNN full-time in Atlanta in March 1992. There she was the only German presenter at the time to present CNN World News from 1992 to 1998,[2] reaching 180 million households worldwide and occasionally hosting other programs such as American Edition[3] [4]. In March 1998 Bettina Luescher returned to Germany and co-hosted CNN This Morning from the n-tv studios in Berlin. In February 2001, she became the official Germany correspondent for CNN and head of the Berlin office [5]. As a member of CNN's 2001 investigative team, she won first place in the National Headliner Award for “Attack on America – 9/11” in 2002.[6]
UN World Food Programme (WFP)
After working for CNN for 15 years, Bettina Luescher joined the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in 2004, when the office in Berlin was first opened.[6]. From 2006 to 2015 she worked as WFP Chief Spokesperson for North America in New York City, and from 2015 to 2018 in Geneva [7] [8]. She currently serves as WFP's Chief Spokesperson in Berlin [9]. Since joining WFP in 2004 she has worked in crisis areas like Afghanistan, Rwanda [10], Gaza, Guatemala, Haiti, Kenya, Darfur and Sri Lanka and Indonesia during the Tsunami [8][6]
