Bhanot (Brahmin)
Bhanot is a sub caste of Punjabi Saraswat Brahmins in North India, mainly residing in Punjab, and Haryana states of India. Bhanots are of Vatasya (rishi) Gotra. Maharishi Vatsa was one of the descendants of Bhrigu Kul. There are multiple theories behind the Bhanot name. one of these is given below
The King of Bathinda in Punjab state was of Rajput clan, his Rajpurohit (chief priest) was Saraswat Brahmin of Vats gotra. During one war when the fort was about to be captured all women; including the wife of rajpurohit went suttee (jumped into fire). At the time she was pregnant and due to the heat or the stress, the baby fell out of her womb. After the war was over, the King accepted the baby boy as his son. People called the son Bhanot which means "born out of fire".
The boy later on married two women, one Rajput and one Brahmin, and that is how Rajput Bhanot's and Brahmin Bhanot's originated. The King who had accepted the son of his rajpurohit, was a Rajput and the biological father of the boy the rajpurohit was a Brahmin. This happened about 400 years ago in or around Bathinda.
