Bidhubhusan Guru (3 October 1920 – 5 July 1973) was an Odia polymath who worked as a teacher, writer, poet, dramatist, essayist, story writer, singer, composer, painter, philosopher, educationist, linguist, grammarian, politician and social worker.

Biography

Early life and Education

Bidhubhusan Guru was born to Saraswati Devi and Pandit Gouracharan Guru Sharma on 3 October 1920 in Tusra, Balangir in the state of Odisha in India. His father, Pandit Gouracharan Guru Sharma was a well known teacher and poet in the region.

He completed his primary education from Tusra Upper Primary School and middle vernacular education from Jarasingha. He entered the Prithviraj High School, Balangir for his high school education, where he nurtured his poetic talents and even wrote for the school magazine Parijata. In 1940, he passed his matriculation examination with a second class under the auspices of Patna University. He went on to appear for the Teachers Certificate Examination from School Examination Board in 1943, after completing his CT training from Secondary Training School, Cuttack. He further completed his IA from Utkal University with a second class in 1948 as a private candidate.

Career

After appearing for the Teachers Certificate Examination, he joined Prithviraj High School as a teacher. There he joined the editorial board of the school magazine Parijata and encouraged students to pursue their interests in literature. During that period, his writings were being regularly published in the established magazines like Chaturanga, Sahakar, Dagar, Jigyasu, Kalinga, Utkala Sahitya. At the mere age of 26, he was a member of the editorial board of Chaturanga (a monthly magazine published by Koshal Kalamandal). His writings were comprised mostly of Odia and kosli folklore, devotional poetry and stories. Along with poetry, he was also blessed with a sense of music and a divine voice. He was also a recognized artist at All India Radio. He holds the record for singing the first Sambalpuri song at the Cuttack Radio Station and the first song at the Sambalpur Radio Station. He has dedicated his life for language, literature, culture, art, drama, music and education. He had also worked as a journalist for the newspaper Kalinga founded by Biju Patnaik.

He was later transferred to Ramai High School of Patnagarh. After some years of teachership at Ramai High School, he resigned and returned to serve his hometown.

During his lifetime, he had made close connections with many eminent litterateurs like Kalindi Charan Panigrahi, Kalicharan Pattnaik, Surendra Mohanty, Gouri Kumar Brahma and Mayadhar Mansingh. Many of his students including Nandini Satpathy, Chandrasekhar Rath and Srinibash Udgata went on to become eminent personalities.

Political life and Social Work

He became the sarpanch of Tusra and became the pillar for many developments in the region. He had also contested for the Tusra Legislative assembly from the Utkal Congress Party established by Biju Patnaik. He was also a member of the committee constituted by govt of Odisha in the year 1965 under the chairmanship of Biju Patnaik for the development of tribal language, literature and culture of the state.

His contributions to Tusra High School are notable. He used to buy books written by renowned litterateurs for the school library and encouraged students to read books.

He had established Bishnupriya Dramatic Association in Tusra for aspiring artists. He had also begun the tradition of Sharadiya Puja and Yajnaparampara in Samaleswari Temple, Tusra.

Legacy

A collection of all his works was published as Bidhubhusan Sanchayana in the year 2020 by Bidhubhusan Sahitya Sansad, Tusra compiled by Odia Writer Jaya Kumar Acharya.

In his memory, a literary magazine Bidhusmruti is published every year since 2020 by Bidhubhusan Guru Smruti Parishad, Balangir.
