Big Dean's Ocean Front Cafe
Big Dean's Ocean Front Cafe or as it was previously known, Big Dean's Muscle-In Cafe, is a restaurant and pub located between the Santa Monica Pier and Santa Monica's Muscle Beach. In 2017, the city council approved the addition of patio space for an additional 24 seats, and it is now one of the few places in Santa Monica that is allowed to stay open and serve liquor until 3am.[1] Food is general American cuisine, but the bar is known for burgers, tacos, seafood, and clam chowder.[2]
History
The restaurant was originally opened as Laring's Lunch Room in 1902, six years before the Santa Monica Pier was built.[3] The original 1913 icebox has been converted to a walk-in cooler, and 1950s shipping crates line the walls.[4] It was opened as Big Dean's Muscle-In Cafe in the 1970s. It is considered one of the oldest bars in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and all of California.[5][6][7]
