History

The concept behind BIGCOWFM began in 2011 on the GoPlayPlay - Meetoto platform, where Daniel Hong served as an in-game host. Inspired by his broadcasting experience, he launched an independent student-focused online station using Blogspot and the Taiwan-based Now.in platform.[1]

By 2012, the station began to gain traction among younger audiences across Malaysia, recruiting volunteer DJs from various states. It officially launched in 2016, receiving media coverage in Nanyang Siang Pau for its unique student-led format.[2]

In 2014, BIGCOWFM adopted the slogan “Bringing Fun to Campus” and expanded its digital presence by experimenting with video streaming.[1]

The station went on hiatus from 2017 to 2023 due to the academic and professional commitments of its team.

In January 2024, BIGCOWFM was relaunched with 25 radio hosts and 10 new programs, as reported by Shanghai Business Media.[3]

Later that year, it released its Chinese New Year song “Good Morning Sir,” which received coverage from Oriental Daily.[4]

On April 1, 2025, BIGCOWFM became the first online radio station in Malaysia to implement full AI-generated music programming, as featured in My Truth Media.[5]
