Bijay Sapkota (born on 13 April in Baglung, Nepal) is an entrepreneur, student rights advocate, and youth leader based in Australia. He is known for his term as National President for Council of International Students Australia (CISA).[1], NSW International student of the Year for 2016[2], NRNA youth of the year award, and his advocacy for international students in Australia, among many others.
Career[edit]
Bijay was brought up in Nepal but moved to Australia in 2013 as an International student joining the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He has worked as an undergraduate representative and a member of the UTS university council under the chancellorship of Catherine Livingstone and Brian Wilson[3]
He was elected and held the position of National President of the Council of International Students Australia from June 2017 until July 2019. In addition, Bijay has served on the ASQA Strategic Review Reference Committee, the TEQSA Student Advisory Group,[4] the International Education Stakeholders Forum, and the Education Visa Consultative Committee by virtue of his role at CISA. Meanwhile, he also has carried out a number of federal duties as an ex-officio member of the National Council for International Education, led by the former education minister Dan Tehan.
Bijay encountered and understood the difficulties and struggles the international students had to go through, being one himself. He has advocated for student safety, welfare, and community services so that international students might have a better and safer experience. He continues to engage as a spokesperson for issues such as harassment, workplace exploitation, discrimination, institution concerns, career obstacles, mental health, and tuition fee fraud.[5]
Volunteering and Speaker Engagements[edit]
He has taken part in several social campaigns as a volunteer. He volunteered as a youth leader in the philanthropic "Walk for Welfare" campaign to raise the $100,000 emergency fund for the welfare of Nepalese-origin international students studying in Australia. He also coordinated and led a team of 120 volunteers in successfully raising 40,000 AUD as the coordinator for Earthquake Relief Fund-raising in 2015 during the Nepal earthquake .
Similarly, Sapkota has been a part of and presented his views as a speaker on different events and places. He has shared his views as a keynote speaker in events such as CISA Workplace Exploitation Seminar 2019, Australian International Education Conference 2018, [6] the 2018 ISANA Program, UBER Eats unions NSW protest 2019, Student Voice Australia Summit 2019, Meeting of Expert Members of the Council for International Education,[7][not in citation given] and many more.
