Bilal Lone
Bilal Gani Lone is a Kashmiri political figure associated with the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Independent Movement. He is the eldest son of Kashmiri political leader Abdul Gani Lone, founder of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference. Following his father's assassination in 2002, Bilal Gani Lone became the People's Conference representative in the Executive Council of the Hurriyat Conference.[1]
Early life and family
Bilal Gani Lone was born in Jammu and Kashmir, India. He is the eldest son of Abdul Gani Lone, a lawyer, politician and founding leader of the People's Conference and a founding member of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.
His younger brother, Sajjad Gani Lone, is an Indian politician and president of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference, while his sister Shabnam Gani Lone is a lawyer and political commentator.
Political career
Following the assassination of Abdul Gani Lone on 21 May 2002, the People's Conference appointed Bilal Gani Lone to represent the party in the Executive Council of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference. His younger brother Sajjad Gani Lone assumed the chairmanship of the People's Conference.[2]
In 2004, ideological and political differences emerged between the two brothers. Sajjad Gani Lone revived the People's Conference as a mainstream political party, whereas Bilal Gani Lone continued to remain associated with separatist politics.[3]
Bilal Gani Lone subsequently headed the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Independent Movement, a political organisation tracing its origins to the original People's Conference after the split between the two factions.
Throughout his political career, Bilal Gani Lone has been associated with the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference and has advocated dialogue as a means to resolve the Kashmir dispute.
Public positions
Bilal Gani Lone has frequently commented on political developments in Jammu and Kashmir. In December 2025, he defended Mirwaiz Umar Farooq following criticism over changes to the Mirwaiz's social media profile, describing the criticism as "dishonest and dangerous".[4]
