Billy Cotton (born August 26, 1981) is an American interior and industrial designer based in New York City..[1] He launched his eponymous interior design firm in 2011.[2] He has appeared on both the Architectural Digest 100[3][not in citation given] and the Elle Decor A List,[4][not in citation given] rankings that showcase top design, decor, and architectural talents. With headquarters in Chelsea and offices in Brooklyn, Cotton's firm specializes in architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, and product design.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Cotton was born in Brookline, Massachusetts.[5] He graduated early from Burlington High School and moved to Paris, France, in 1998 where he worked at the renowned Clignancourt Flea Market.[6] He returned to the United States in 1999 and attended Hunter College in New York City before enrolling at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.[5]

Career[edit]

He made furniture and did odd jobs for Manhattanites while attending Pratt and in 2005 he started his first business, Custom Resource.[7] In April 2007, he opened Billy Cotton, a multi-disciplinary firm with a show room in Brooklyn that was converted from an old denture factory.[8] His 2010 dinnerware line at Bergdorf Goodman caught the attention of Elle Decor, which labeled him a "rising star."[9]

In 2011, he turned his creative focus to interior design and his first major commission came in 2012 when he renovated artist Cindy Sherman's East Hampton farm house.[10] In early 2020 he was named creative director at Ralph Lauren Home,[11] but left a year later to return to his own firm.[12] Much of his work is inspired by the Bauhaus and Regency eras.[13] His first monograph, titled Billy Cotton: Interior and Design Work was published by Rizzoli in 2022[14]

Personal Life[edit]

Cotton lost his Chelsea apartment to a fire in 2002.[15] His prized possession is a letter from his mother.[16]
