Bina Sarkar Ellias

Bina Sarkar Ellias (b. 1949) is an Indian poet and editor, designer, and publisher of International Gallerie, a magazine she founded in 1997. International Gallerie aims to highlight unity in diversity through the arts and culture.

Education

Sarkar Ellias graduated with honours in English from Scottish Church College, University of Calcutta.^{[citation needed]}

Career

After graduating, Sarkar Ellias began working as a freelance writer for Desmon Doig's Junior Statesman. She was then hired as assistant editor to T. M. Ramachandran of Film World, a critical Indian magazine focused on eclectic world cinema. She went on to be a sub-editor at Eve's Weekly. She has contributed articles for The Times of India,^[1] The Indian Express, and the Hindustan Times.

In 1984, Sarkar Ellias and her spouse Rafeeq Ellias co-founded the advertising agency Nucleus, where she served as Creative Director for 12 years. In 1997, she founded International Gallerie to address socio-political and cultural issues through excellence in the global arts. She has published 51 volumes of the magazine. Sarkar Ellias wrote The Big Book of Indian Art and is also an art curator; in 2025, she curated Free, Fearless, Fantastical an art & poetry show for the Pen + Brush Gallery in New York City. She also writes fiction, and has published six books of poetry, along with two chapbooks.

Awards

Sarkar Ellias received the Woman Achiever's award from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and its women's wing, FLO (FICCI Ladies Organisation) in 2013.^[2] She won the Women to Watch Award in 2024 for excellence in her print work.

Personal life

Sarkar Ellias married Rafeeq Ellias, a photographer and documentary filmmaker, in Tokyo.^{[citation needed]}
