Bioinformatics and Human Electrophysiology Lab (BiHELab)
The Bioinformatics and Human Electrophysiology Lab (BiHELab) is a research lab on the Department of Informatics at Ionian University. The laboratory was founded in 2014 (ΦΕΚ 11.12.2014/3337). The director of BiHELab is Dr. Panayiotis Vlamos, professor at Ionian University and president of the Department of Informatics. BiHELab’s research focuses on geriatrics and neurodegeneration, ranging from basic science to clinical and pharmaceutical developments.[1] BiHELab is an academic associate of the annual institution of scientific meetings on Mathematics and Information Technology in Heidelberg Laureate Forum.[2]
Research Objectives
Research at BiHELab focuses on fundamental questions in geriatrics and neurodegeneration.[3] BiHELab’s scientists explore key processes underlying neuronal function and behavior through the latest molecular, imaging and electrophysiological and computational technologies in neuroscience.[4] Main research interests include the study of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS depression, autism-spectrum disorders anxiety, epilepsy and insomnias. They also include:
- Mitochondrial abnormalities
- Protein structure, function and stability prediction, sequence and domain analyses
- Mathematical modeling and data analysis in proteomics, genomics and chemistry
- Systems biology approaches
- Large scale statistical and machine learning studies
- Design and implementation of databases and software programs
- Online Health Record Systems
- Medical Information Systems
- Pattern recognition techniques
- Knowledge Management System
- Artificial Neural Networks
- Neuroeducation
Equipment
BiHELab is a modern research laboratory with modern equipment. BiHELab has an advanced microscopy unit, as well as Neurophysiological equipment.
GeNedis world congress
The Bioinformatics and Human Electrophysiology Lab of the Ionian University is the main organizer of GeNeDis World Congress. The Congress focuses on Genetics, Geriatrics and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research and occurs every two years. The 1stGeNeDis was held in Corfu in 2014 (11 to 13 April).[5] The 2nd took place in Sparta in 2016 (20 to 23 of October).[6] The 3rd will be held in Toronto, Canada from 25 to 28 of October 2018. Prominent scientists and researchers from around the world meet to discuss the state-of-the-art in neurodegenerative diseases research.
