Inspired by the Biophilia hypothesis[1], (the instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems), pianist and composer Fabian Almazan[2] founded the independent American record company and label known as Biophilia Records in 2011.
Based in New York City, Biophilia Records artists volunteer each year in community events organized by non-profit organizations that specialize in conservation, sustainability.
In 2017, Biophilia Records created the Biopholio™[3], a more environmentally-friendly physical product than the CD. The Biopholio™ is a double-sided, 20-panel origami medium of artwork and liner notes; each one made entirely out of FSC-certified paper [4] , hand-folded and printed using plant-based inks. Inside each Biopholio™ is a unique code for the listener to digitally download the music in hers/his preferred format including uncompressed WAV and AIFF files.
Biophilia Records was listed on the DownBeat magazine's critics' poll in the year 2019[5] receiving 18 votes.
