Bipin Joshi is a Nepali agriculture student who was abducted during the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel. He was taken from Kibbutz Alumim, where he was participating in an agricultural training program, and remains held in captivity in the Gaza Strip as of 2025.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Joshi is from Kailali District in Sudurpashchim Province, Nepal. In 2023, he traveled to Israel to participate in an agricultural training program at Kibbutz Alumim.[4][5][6]
Abduction and attack
On 7 October 2023, during the attack on Israel, Joshi and other Nepali students were present at Kibbutz Alumim, which came under assault. Several Nepalis were killed and Joshi was taken hostage.[7][8][9]
Release negotiations
Joshi's current condition is unknown. He remains in captivity, and his name was not included in an early lists of hostages to be released in the 2025 Gaza war ceasefire.[10][11][12]
The government of Nepal coordinated with Israel, Qatar, and international partners to secure Joshi's release.[13][14][15] Joshi’s family and the Nepali government have made repeated appeals to international bodies for support.[16][17][18]
His name was not included in the ceasefire agreement prisoner release lists, which further deepened concern.[19][20][21][22][23][24]
