Biography
Early life
Paula Moore was born in the state of Tennessee. Her family moved around, first to Chicago, then to Evanston, Illinois, then France and Spain, ultimately settling in New Hampshire. By the time she was thirteen she had changed schools nine times. Along with travelling, her childhood was marked by music and theater - from being surrounded by pianos and guitars in her home, to discovering gospel in church, and the folk songs and musical comedies she learned in school. Her parents loved to entertain and their home was always filled with actors, musicians, students and professors.[2] Her first stage appearance was at age seven in Evanston, Illinois in a play based on Richard Wagner’s Ring of the Liebelung. She portrayed the main character The Golden Fish, who narrates the ensuing drama from the depths of the Rhine.
After moving to New Hampshire, at the age of sixteen she acted in a chamber theater adaptation of James Joyce’s The Dubliners and portrayed Angélique in Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid, both directed by John C. EdwardsPassings: John C. Edwards of the University of New Hampshire.
Études des beaux-arts
She studied French Literature and Fine Arts at the University of Wisconsin for two years, whilst studying serial music with composer and conductor René Leibowitz. Then, she attended University of New Hampshire for one year before moving to New York City in 1968. Whilst there, she modelled and studied acting with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. After moving away from New York City, she continued studying Morphology with Jean-François_Debord at the Academie des Beaux Arts de Paris[1] and Etching and Photography at Central St Martins College in London.
Careers
Birdpaula has had numerous careers throughout her lifetime. Following her studies and acting in the United States, she moved to Paris in the 1970s to work as a model for Vogue, Elle, Marie-Claire with photographers such as Gilles Bensimon, Patrick Demarchelier, Hans Feurer, Marc Hispard, and Guy Bourdin. At that same time, she studied acting with Andréas Voutsinas for several years, taking classical voice training with tenor Enzo Seri, and studying harmony and piano with jazz pianist Jeff Gardner.[3] In 1984, she released the album High and Low, under her birthname Paula Moore. It was produced by Daniel Vangarde, and included a cult hit Valparaiso[4], which was later used in Chanel's 2018/19 Croisière fashion show.[5] In the 1980s and 90s she sang regularly with a blues band on the jazz and blues club circuit in Paris as well as in hospitals and prisons.[6] She studied morphology with Jean-François Debord at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1993 to 1995. As a visual artist she goes by the name of Paula Moore and since the 1990s has exhibited her paintings throughout France.[4] In 2003, she recorded vocals on her son's EP, entitled Utopia, by Jackson and His Computerband and in 2005 performed "Fast Life" on his album Smash..[7] During this time she was signed to Barclay, and working with her son rejuvenated her dedication to music and a professional career. In 2005, she adopted the pseudonym birdpaula as a tribute to her love of Native American art and culture and, according to her biological father and several cousins, to her supposed Native American roots. In 2005, her album Birdpaula was released on the label Perfect Kiss PIAS, produced by Marc Collin.[4] She met Marc Collin through her son Jackson and His Computerband. [3] Paula writes about the meaning of the album on her website www.birdpaula.com.
