Birgit Abrecht (born June 17, 1961 in Birkenfeld, Baden-Wuerttemberg) is a German architect.

Life and career

From 1981 to 1986 Birgit Abrecht studied architecture at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, where she received her diploma. In 1989, she founded her Office for Solar Architecture in Keltern. Since then she is working in solar architecture and sustainable construction. Her projects include low-energy, passive and solar active houses.

One of the most famous buildings planned by her is her own Solarhaus Abrecht, a residential and office building with passive solar energy use, transparent thermal insulation, a solar thermal system and a photovoltaic system in Keltern. The solar active house was built in 1993 and became internationally renowned for its technology and design.[1] [2] Abrecht was awarded the first European Solar Prize for this building in 1994. [3]

Another part of Abrecht's work is the energy-efficient renovation of existing buildings. Furthermore, Abrecht is a registered energy efficiency expert and energy consultant. As a speaker and author, she writes articles and books about architecture and housing. In 2017, she launched the e-learning platform „Future Home" to help residents to improve their quality of living.
