Bite of a Mango is a 2022 Canadian drama/comedy film written by Joanne Jansen and Ron Dias and directed by Ron Dias in his directorial debut. The film stars Jayne Kamara, Ryan Rosery (from Mayor of Kingstown)[2], Orville Cummings (from Star Trek Discovery)[3], Nathan Taylor, and Shawna Stewart.

The movie had its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival on June 18, 2022,[4] and its Canadian premiere at the ReelWorld Film Festival.[5] The Toronto premiere was sold out in a few days and received a standing ovation. [6]. On October 18, 2022, the 22nd Reelworld Film Festival Awards Show premiered on YouTube, and awarded Bite of a Mango the Audience Choice Award and Jayne Kamara won Outstanding Actress in a feature film.[7][8].

Plot

Production

Joanne Jansen and Ron Dias wrote the film during the height of the pandemic in two days, drawing inspiration from what was going on in the world in 2020. It was filmed over five days during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The team of three took all necessary precautions to ensure a safe environment while the rest of the industry was shut down.[9] In order to keep the budget under ten thousand dollars, Dias and Jansen wore multiple hats including editing, colouring, sound composing, cinematography and set decorating.[10]

Over a number of TV appearances they confirmed that the film was written out of frustration as TV and Film in Canada weren't being represented accurately when it came to displaying Toronto. During the height of the pandemic, where no one had access to work, they decided to include the pandemic in the script as it would be relatable and easier to film as everywhere had restrictions and mostly people had to wear masks.[11]
