The Bizarium Museum is a cabinet of curiosities consisting of remarkable inventions and is located in Sluis, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Bizarium elucidates upon the resourcefulness and the technical ingenuity of humankind and its pursuit for improving life on earth.[1] The museum tries to illustrate that failing and experimenting are the foundation of innovation and progress.

Bizarium’s collection is built around full-scale reconstructions based on historical etchings, drawings, pictures or patents. All the pieces of the impressive collection are made with respect to authentic craftmanship, methods and expertise, while also using contemporary production processes.[1]

The Bizarium is a private collection owned by the designers duo Marc De Jonghe and Ann Geerinck, who are the founders, creators and designers of this unique cabinet of curiosities.[1]

History[edit]

The museum, situated in a historical building in Sluis, first opened its doors to the public on December 10th, 2016[2] and was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2020.[3]

Collection[edit]

Along with the tradition of cabinet of curiosities, the collection is arranged in an eclectic order showcasing a wide range of creative inventions by some of history’s most celebrated inventors. Some of Leonardo da Vinci’s ingenious creations, such as his self-driving car, his ornithopter and several perpetua mobilia are part of the collection. Moreover, multiple extraordinary concepts by Nikola Tesla, Athanasius Kircher, Johannes Kepler, Andreas Böckler, Thomas Edison and Robert Hooke can be discovered by the visitors, as well as multiple other technical savvy inventions.[1]

Furthermore, Bizarium also showcases inventions inspired by nature, also known as biomimicry. Some examples that can be found in the museum are the walking wheelbarrow by Chebyshev, which is based on the plantigrade mechanism, the swimming umbrella, influenced by squids’ transformations and a parachute inspired by maple seeds.[1]

Peculiar inventions devised during the Victorian era, such as the hair growth helmet, the tapeworm trap or the balloon bicycle are exhibited as well and are all characterized by the rise of industrialization.
