Nationality: American
Occupation: Investor, thoroughbred owner/breeder
Known for: Owning Kingsdown House Stables, Lambourn, Berkshire
Owning/breeding: Masked Marvel, Stradivarius, Tante Rose and Assessor
Entrance into Thoroughbred Ownership
Nielsen began buying thoroughbreds in the early 1990s; one of his earliest purchases was the colt Assessor. Around the turn of the millennium he started to focus more on breeding, rather than buying his thoroughbreds. One of his first and most fruitful breeding decisions was to purchase the mare My Branch in 2002 at the Tattersalls December Sale, followed by her daughter, Tante Rose, at the same sale in 2003.
Nielsen has been particularly fixated on winning The Derby, now the Investec Derby, held in Epsom Downs. His breeding efforts have mainly been targeted on raising horses suited to winning that specific race, which is run over a mile and a half (2400 m).
Racing Accomplishments
Nielsen’s most successful horses have been Assessor, Tante Rose, Masked Marvel and Stradivarius. All have been Group I winners, with Masked Marvel enjoying a Classic victory in the 2011 St. Leger Stakes. In 2009 Nielsen purchased the Kingsdown House and its training yard in Lambourn, Berkshire, England, home of the 1974 Epsom Derby winner Snow Knight. The facility is now home base for Ed Walker, who trains some of Nielsen’s horses, amongst others, and leases the yard and grass gallops from Nielsen. Kingsdown’s all-weather gallops are leased to The Jockey Club. Nielsen also utilizes trainers Roger Charlton and John Gosden.
Stradivarius, whom Nielsen bred, is a 4-year-old trained by Gosden that still actively races and recently won The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Some of his other active thoroughbreds include Almodovar, trained by Charlton, and Stephenson’s Rocket, trained by Walker. All three horses race in England.
Entrance into Thoroughbred Ownership
Nielsen began buying thoroughbreds in the early 1990s. One of his earliest purchases was the colt Assessor who became a favorite for the 1992 Epsom Derby. Around the turn of the millennium he started to focus more on breeding rather than buying his thoroughbreds. He had been studying pedigrees for a couple of decades already and was dissatisfied with what he saw at the thoroughbred auctions. One of his earliest and most fruitful breeding decisions was to purchase the mare My Branch in 2002 at the Tattersalls December Sale, followed by her daughter, Tante Rose, at the same sale in 2003.
