Black Ink is a raster graphics editor designed to be used for digital illustration, developed in C++ for Windows. It is independently developed and published by software developer Bleank. Its primary goal is to allow artists a great deal of freedom with large canvas sizes, programmable brushes, and a powerful layer editor.

    History

(Give a good amount of history about Black Ink here, and I'll come back to format it -Alscenic)

    GPU-Based

By leveraging the power of the computer's GPU, Black Ink gains a significant performance advantage over most raster graphics software. Black Ink uses the GPU almost exclusively, which makes it possible to create and edit documents with a pixel resolution of up to 65,536 × 65,536.

    Features

Black Ink is a drawing software that offers the possibility to create procedural brushes thanks to new tools, such as the controller editor[1] , but also thanks to the brush shader language (BSL)[2] for the most technical users.

    Nodal approach for Brushes parameters

One of the particularities of Black Ink is to propose a nodal approach to create its brushes. The user has at his disposal parameters of speed, pressure, position and can combine them with a graphical interface to create unique brushes.

    Brush Shader Language

Black Ink introduces a pixel shader language for brushes with a built-in editor[3] . It allows to program the pixel behavior of a brush. This language is mainly based on the HLSL.

    Node-Based Layer Editor

The 1st public version[4] of Black Ink had only one layer, then at the July 11, 2013 update 8 layers were added to the software. It is in December 2019[5] that Black Ink introduces its Layer nodal system. This unique system in the field of digital drawing is rather inspired by what is found in 3D with a software like Houdini or editing with Nuke. However, the UI setup tries to keep a linear logic if necessary with an operator such as the Layer Stack which behaves like a traditional Stack of a classic 2D software. The number of layers is theoretically unlimited with this version.

    Custom UI

Black Ink uses a GPU vector rendering technology designed by Bleank that is used to display brushes and effects, as well as render the entire Black Ink interface.

    Others features

(Describe these features more - see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP#Features and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krita#Customisation -Alscenic)

    • graphics tablet support
    • The layers are managed in 64 bit per pixel internally[6]
    • Continuous auto-save
    • Customizable keyboard
    • Canvas crop and resize
    • Straight Line Tools
    • Draw Stabilizer

    Versions

    Stand alone

Black Ink is first released in Public Beta in November 2012.

    Steam

Black Ink was one of the first software to be greenlighted[7] in October 2012 when Steam allowed non-game software to enter their store. However Bleank wanted Black Ink to have the Layer[8] feature before it could be released on the Store. That's why Black Ink was only officially released on September 8, 2013[9] on the Steam Store.
