Blacken Open Air was founded in 2016 as an open air festival expansion of an annual rock and metal festival in Alice Springs called Blacken the Earth that primarily focused on bands from Northern Territory[2]. The festival was established by The Black Wreath, an Alice Springs-based record label and event promoter[3].

The first Blacken Open Air was held over the Easter weekend of 2016 and headlined by King Parrot, Colossvs and Nokturnl. The following year the festival had a 34-band line-up featuring bands from every Australian state and territory and was headlined by Desecrator and Whoretopsy[4].

The 2018 event was held at the Gap View Hotel in Alice Springs[5], once again over the Easter weekend. High Tension and Earth Rot were the headlining acts along with 26 other bands.

In 2019 Blacken Open Air moved to Ross River Resort in Hale, 86 kilometres east of Alice Springs over the weekend of May 4 and 5, with headliners Cosmic Psychos and Boris the Blade. The festival was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the event instead planned for mid-winter 2021 with Thy Art is Murder, Amyl and the Sniffers, Psycroptic and Clowns among the acts to appear and New Zealand band Shepherds Reign to be the first international act on the bill[6]. COVID-19 lockdowns forced the event to be cancelled less than a month from the planned date. The 2022 festival was held between July 29 and August 1, with US death metal band Revocation headlining along with Amyl and the Sniffers, Psycroptic, Shepherds Reign and more than 30 other bands from around Australia[7]
