Blatherskite were an Australian alternative metal band formed in 1996. The group's founding mainstay was Tim Lim on guitar and vocals. They issued three studio albums, Dribble (June 1996), Three Worlds (August 2005) and Where the Wasteland Ends (August 2009). The group disbanded in 2013.

History[edit]

Early years (1995–98)[edit]

Blatherskite formed as an alternative metal band in 1996 in Sydney with Brendan Davie on drums, Tim Lim on guitar and vocals, and Tom Waters on bass guitar.[1] Davie and Lim had been members of the Cheese, a circus punk group.[1] Lim recalled his high school band with Davie, which "began because we hated most of the music we heard and wanted to make music we could listen to. Obviously we have no ego issues whatsoever."[2] At Zen Studios Blatherskite recorded their first extended play, Vathek, and released it six weeks later. Tracks were played on youth radio networks. In late 1996, the band recorded an album, Dribble, at Troy Horse studios, which was released independently in the following year.[1][3]

Three Worlds (1999-2006)[edit]

Nick Goryl joined the band as vocalist in 1999, and according to Lim "During this time there was lots of music written, and completely forgotten about."[2] The band spent 2004 to 2005 recording and mixing their next album, Three Worlds, in their home studio with Lim as engineer.[2] Waters left, due to health reasons, and Justin Min temporarily replaced him on bass guitar for live shows and recording the album. Three Worlds was released in 2005, and received airplay on independent Sydney radio stations 2SER and Fbi. Simon Milburn of The Metal Forge described it as "Tool influenced experimental rock with promise... but it won't be for everyone."[4] In mid-2005 Chris Angell joined on bass guitar for the band; they toured New Zealand at the end of the year culminating in a New Year's Eve show at Whangamata Beach Hop.

Where the Wasteland Ends (2007-present)[edit]

After the New Zealand tour Angell left Blatherskite and they began work on their next studio album, Where the Wasteland Ends. Tracks were co-written by Davie, Lim and Goryl. The group added Stewart Horsfield on guitar and Morris Mezzatesta on bass guitar for a run of live shows. Mezzatesta left prior to recording the album and was replaced by Dave Hammer (Gay Paris, MzAnthropik, Hell City Glamours). Horsfield provided some writing and recording parts. The album artwork was a collaborative between Blatherskite and Timothy Lamont (Graphic artist for Morbid Sheep) so that an abstract comic was included with the album.

Where the Wasteland Ends was released on 8 August 2009. It was featured on Andrew Haug's metal, rock music programme, "Full Metal Racket", broadcast on Australian national radio station, Triple J. Davie left Blatherskite to start a family. Initially Dan Nahum (Bleakwood, Sword Towards Self, Ironwood, The Veil) filled in for drums, in between his other projects, while Mat Newton joined on bass guitar.

Horsfield left the band in 2010 and Louis Rosin on drums and Luka Szcepanik on bass guitar joined while Newton moved to guitars. The group began playing shows around Sydney's urban and regional areas, culminating in a tour through Queensland. Soon after Ben Nicholls on bass guitar and Stephen Reinhardt on drums joined. In 2011 Blatherskite performed at the Soundwave festival,[5] alongside Protest the Hero, Iron Maiden, Primus and Slash. Blatherskite achieved No. 1 on the Weekly, Monthly and Overall charts on Roadrunner Unsigned website.[6]

As the band went into writing for proposed album, Reinhardt left, due to a shoulder injury,[7] and Katrina Tuffy (ex-Kunvuk) became their new drummer. In late 2011 Blatherskite released an animated music video, "Third Day Fear". In 2013 the group disbanded with Lim and Nicholls forming a new metal-rock group, the Abyss Collective.[8]
