Blockchain interoperability
The term blockchain is used at least in three senses: a data structure that is a sequence of blocks, a distributed system that supports such a data structure and operations over it, and a component of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency system.[1] We use the term blockchain system in the second sense.
With the increasing number of blockchain systems appearing, even only those that support cryptocurrencies,[2] blockchain interoperability is becoming a topic of major importance. The objective is to support transferring assets from one blockchain system to another blockchain system. Wegner[3] stated that "interoperability is the ability of two or more software components to cooperate despite differences in language, interface, and execution platform". The objective of blockchain interoperability is therefore to support such cooperation among blockchain systems, despite these kinds of differences.
There are already several blockchain interoperability solutions available.[4] They can be classified in three categories: cryptocurrency interoperability approaches, blockchain engines, and blockchain connectors.
The IETF has a recent Blockchain-interop working group that already produced the draft of a blockchain interoperability architecture.[5]
