Bloomers Comedy
Bloomers Comedy is a student sketch comedy and musical parody group at the University of Pennsylvania. It is the nation’s first collegiate all-female sketch comedy and musical parody group.
History
The group was formed by a group of female Penn students who originally created sketches in their dorm informally.[1] According to their website, Bloomers was created by 31 original founding members, who played a variety of roles in the running of the group. The troupe now has 40 members. In addition to writers and cast for each show, the troupe includes a band, technical crew, writers, business team, costumers, and an executive board.
Current Main Company
Produce one major show each semester. Unlike other college sketch teams, Bloomers’ shows have full sets, costumes, and lights. This adds an additional dimension to the Bloomers organization, as many of its members are involved in a managerial, business, or leadership context but not writing material.
In Popular Culture
Bloomers has many alumni who have gone on to a career in comedy. Foremost amongst these is Vanessa Bayer, a cast member on Saturday Night Live, who frequently discussed the sketch group in televised interviews.[2]
