Blue Oil
Blue Oil was a Montreal punk rock, new wave, and alternative rock band formed in 1978 by Manon Fatter (drums, vocals), Christiane Fatter (guitar, vocals), Aline Batmanian (lead vocals), Mario Petrozzi (guitar), and Manon Asselin (bass, vocals). They named the group “Blue Oil” during the 1979 oil crisis and played on the college and festival circuit in Montreal.
From 1981 through 1985, Marie Martine Bédard (guitar) joined Manon Asselin and Manon Fatter. In 1982, the trio self-released a 7” 45 rpm single Money / Living for the Time, earning a positive review in Music Express. In 1988, the Canadian label Alert Records issued two Blue Oil vinyl records: the 7" single I Blow You a Kiss and the five-song, 12" Blue Oil EP. The group played an anti-Free Trade benefit concert on June 30, 1988.[1] Blue Oil disbanded in 1992.
During the 1980s, Blue Oil appeared on several television programs, including Pop Express hosted by Roch Denis and Musi-Video hosted by Erica Ehm. Blue Oil's music appears in the documentaries On fait toutes du show-business (1984) directed by Nicole Giguère of Vidéo Femmes, and Montreal New Wave (2016) directed by Érik Cimon. Blue Oil has been called the “premier groupe punk féminin au Québec[2]” on Radio-Canada and "Quebec’s First All-Women Punk Group[3]" by Psychedelic Baby Mag.
