Blue Wall (Detroit newspapers and Univ. of Michigan football)
The Blue Wall is the phenomenon that exists specifically between the two major Detroit newspapers, the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, and the University of Michigan's football program, but can also be applied to the metro Detroit news market in general. Since Michigan's football program generated the sixth highest revenues in the nation[1] and also one of the most popular, it is very influential among newspaper readers and customers in southeast Michigan and throughout the state. Sports coverage is large driver of newspaper revenue,[2] so the newspapers provide flattering, uncritical [4] and often hypocritical [6] news coverage of the program in order to avoid offending both paying newspaper customers and the UM football program.[citation needed] If the papers offend the program, they risk losing media credentials and thus access to coaches and players for interviews and other related stories [5].
Many believe the Blue Wall phenomenon is a sour grapes conspiracy theory among fans of Michigan's football rivals, but others believe it is a real thing.[3]
