Bluebird Theatre Company is an international non-profit theater company founded in 2019[1] whose aim is "to leave an indelible, positive imprint on the soul."[2] It was named after the New York State bird, the Eastern Bluebird with symbolism associated with hard work, transformation, and hope. Bluebird Theatre Company was founded out of the Atlantic Theater Company's Conservatory in Chelsea, Manhattan. It is known for being women-led, with the leadership board historically being a majority of, if not entirely, made up of female-identifying individuals.

It is notable for having produced plays with women at the forefront, such as their inaugural production of Federico García Lorca's critically acclaimed play The House of Bernarda Alba at Atlantic Stage 2,[3][4] and for featuring many new works since.

Known for "excellent moment-to-moment work" and "the perfect culmination of all the work and elements" (according to Mary McCann). One of the company's longtime efforts is "Bluebird Broadcast", a collection of radio plays by diverse artists.

Productions[edit]

Since its inception, Bluebird Theatre Co. has produced live and virtual plays, including the productions of Federico García Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba (Spanish: La casa de Bernarda Alba) (2019), Mary Zimmerman's The Secret in the Wings (2020), and Euripides' The Trojan Women (2021).

Virtual productions by Bluebird include SHUTTERS (One Acts), Qui Nguyen's She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges, and iLaugh (One Acts), and Trojan Women directed by Gracie Rittenberg.

Bluebird Theatre Company has also had a notable collaboration with the award-winning NYC-based playwright, director, songwriter, educator, and actor Jessica Wu,[5] who directed the New York premier of A Little Less Than Kind, a gender-bent adaptation of Hamlet by Gracie Rittenberg.

They have featured new plays at The Producers Club in New York in a production of One Acts titled 3, 2,1![6]
