Bobby Holmes

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bobby Holmes is an Australian-Japanese singer and musician who placed in the top 24 of the eighth season of Australian Idol [1]. Before and following Australian Idol, Holmes has also performed with family members as part of JAB Band Tokyo, The Hitmen and the Angus and Bobby duo.[1]

Early life

He has performed as a supporting act for well-known names such as INXS, The Go-go’s, Midnight Oil and Jimmy Barnes, and has a flourishing commercial career with musical credits including Mazda, Toyota, Coke and Disney.[2]

When Holmes was ten years old, his father and brothers started a band, prompting him to learn to sing and play the guitar before beginning to tour Tokyo for gigs at 12 years old.[3] At 13, he moved to Australia, bilingual in Japanese and English.[4] Holmes lived with his grandfather and brother for the first year in the Gold Coast before his parents also relocated. He graduated from Southport State High School in 2022, a school also formerly attended by Australian Idol judge Amy Shark.

Pre-Idol career

Prior to Australian Idol, Holmes performed with his brothers, Angus and Jacky, in JAB Band Tokyo.[5] When they lived in Japan, the brothers performed in TV ads with both English and Japanese vocals.[4] In 2015, they were backing vocals for the song Seven Colors in the 2015 White Album by News, a song inspired by the FIFA 2013 World Cup theme song. The Holmes brothers performed around Tokyo before relocating to Australia, where they continued to travel the Queensland coast for performances. They released a four-song EP, Just My Enemy, in 2020.[4] JAB was scheduled to appear on the 2020 season of Australia’s Got Talent, which was cancelled due to COVID lockdowns.

Australian Idol Season 8

Holmes successfully auditioned for the eighth season of Australian Idol in 2023 as the show returned from a 14-year break from television. He first auditioned solo with Billy Ocean’s “Love Really Hurts Without You.”[6] Judges, Kyle Sandilands, Meghan Trainor, Amy Shark and Harry Connick Jr., then asked Holmes to sing with his brother Angus who had auditioned prior to him that day.[7][8] Together, they performed “Any way you want it” by Journey.[9]

While they progressed in the competition as individual acts, the judges expressed a wish to make them into a band[10][6] During the top 50, Bobby performed “Perfect” by Ed Sheehan as part of a group challenge with contestants Josh Hannan, Tully Wishart, Cooper Turnbull, and James Vawser,[11] and the chorus challenge with "Wake Me Up" by Avicii performing alongside country artists Damian Agius and Connor Bulge.[12] Bobby successfully progressed to the competition’s top 24, although his brother did not proceed.

In the top 24 round, Holmes competed by performing “Locked out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars. Judges commented they missed seeing him perform with his brother,[13] with Sandilands reaffirming his strength as a solo artist.[14] He was eliminated and did place as a top 24 finalist.

Holmes is now concentrating on his solo career while continuing with planned performances playing solo, and also with The Hitmen and the Angus and Bobby duo.[15] He also plans to release his first EP in late 2023 that hones into life in Gold Coast and Japan.[15]
