Boffin of the Yale

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Boffins of the Yale, more commonly referred to as the Boffins, was a hobbit family that lived in the Yale.[1]

Origin[edit]

The Boffin family traced their origin to one Buffo Boffin, who was born in or around The Yale.[1] He was born around the year S.R 1125, and died around the year S.R 1215 (aged c.90 years old).[2] His wife, who founded the Boffin family with him was one Ivy Goodenough.[1]

Characteristics[edit]

Not much about their characteristics are known, but according to their etymology (see below), they might be known for laughing loudly.

Connection with other hobbit families[edit]

Bolger[edit]

It seems as if the Bolgers and the Boffins have a huge connection. This comes from two facts.

The first fact is that its female founder, Alfrida of the Yale, seems to be associated with the Yale, the old home of the Boffins. This could make Alfrida a distant kinswoman of the Boffins, which would make the entire Bolger family connected to the Boffins.[3]

The second fact is that the Bolgers were known for the fat size, and one Otto Boffin, was also known as Otto the Fat.[1]

Baggins[edit]

The Boffins and the Bagginses had a huge connection. This is because the Bagginses, were descendants of one Berylla Boffin, who was a Boffin herself. Thus, the Boffins and the Bagginses were kin to each other. The Baggins family could also be considered a branch of the Boffin Family.[4]

Etymology[edit]

The name Boffin is a anglicization into English of the Westron word Bophîn,[5] which apparently means one who laughs loudly.[6]An early idea by Tolkien was to translate it "Loffin", as Bophîn (at that time) had a connection to "Laugh".

Pronunciation[edit]

Boffin is pronounced as BO-FFIN.

Notes[edit]

  1. Reputed to have 'gone to sea' in 1195
