Anatoli Vladimirovich Boiko (born in 1939) - scientist, founder of a new scientific direction in turbine construction - optimal designing of turbo machines, educator, organizer of science and education.

Biography[edit]

Born in August 22, 1939, Lohvitsa, Poltava region, Ukraine in the family of office employees.

Education

Degrees

  • Candidate of Technical Sciences, thesis "Research of work of steam turbines stages with a small hub’s ratio" defended at Kharkiv polytechnical institute (1967).
  • Doctor of Technical Sciences, doctoral thesis, "The optimal design, development and research of the flow path of the axial turbines» defended at the Moscow Higher Technical School named after N.E. Bauman with the formulation of the specialized scientific Council "considered that the combination of scientific states and results formulated and substantiated in the dissertation, can be characterized as a new promising trend in the turbomachines theory" (1983).

Academic Positions

  • Associate Professor (1972).
  • Full Professor (1984).

Professional Appointments

  • 1961–1972 Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute (now National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute"), researcher, lecturer;
  • 1968–1969 Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, USA), researcher;
  • 1972–1985 Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute, Vice-Rector for academic affairs and international relations;
  • 10.1976–12.1976 University of Liverpool, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UK, scientific work and giving the lectures;
  • 1985–1999 United Nations, Director Industry and Technology Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE);
  • 2000–2004 National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute", Professor;
  • 2004–2017 National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute", Head of the Turbine Projection Chair.

Honorary Titles and Awards[edit]

  • Winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in science and technology for the development of scientific fundamentals of the gas dynamic improvement and creation highly efficient and reliable flow of paths of the steam turbines with a capacity of 200-1000 MW (Decree of the President of Ukraine, February 19, 1992);
  • Awarded two orders: the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1980), Order of Friendship of Peoples (1985) and the Medal "For labour valour" (1970).

Scientific and Administrative Activities[edit]

Research activities devoted to the development of the basic principles of the gas dynamic improvement of the axial turbines flow paths with the aim to enhancing their efficiency and reliability. They included the development of fundamentals of the theory of turbomachines optimization; methods of optimal design of turbine nozzle and blade profiles; determination of the optimal number of the stages in turbines and distribution of the heat drop; finding of the optimal twist laws of nozzles and blades along the radius, both for individual stages and for the group of the stages and for the whole cylinder. Research work includes theoretical, computational and experimental research of the profiles, stages and sections of the high, medium and low pressures cylinders, which cover almost all diversity of the stages existing powerful turbines.

The value of scientific research is confirmed by their widespread use in industry. Together with the team of open joint-stock company Turboatom”, the new generation of powerful steam turbines К-220-44-2M, K-330-23, 5 and K-540-23, 5 were created, which allowed to significantly reducing fuel consumption for production of 1 kW hours of electric power [5, 6].

On the position of Vice-Rector for academic affairs and international relations, the priority area of his activities was establishment of friendly relations and activation of international scientific cooperation with universities and enterprises of foreign countries.

In the capacity of the  Director of Industry and Technology Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)  he analyzes  and popularizes the best practices in UNECE member countries gained positive experience in industries such as mechanical engineering and automation, chemical industry, metallurgy, creating non-waste technologies in engineering, alternative sources of energy as well as generalizes and applies experience in such areas of countries activities as State policy in the field of science and technology, standardization, development of small and medium-size enterprises. The regional programs "Metallurgy and Ecology", "Chemical Industry - Sustainable Economic and Ecological Development" (CHEMISEED) were elaborated and implemented for the UNECE Member States.

  Professor Boiko A. V. is the author of more than 170 articles, 6 patents, and 11 books, among which are six scientific monographs and four tutorials.

Under the supervision of Professor Boiko A.V. twelve Candidates of Technical Sciences and three Doctors of Sciences defended successfully dissertations.
