Bojuka is a self defense system. Training emphasizes simple techniques using common gross motor skills that are maintained under stressful conditions.[1] Bojuka teaches threat elimination through awareness, avoidance, and the reasonable use of force. The Bojuka Self Defense System includes blocks, body movement, grappling, joint manipulation and strikes to vital points of the body and central nervous system.[2] The core techniques are designed to be committed to muscle memory and function in a variety of different assault scenarios.

History[edit]

The foundation of the Bojuka system is based on martial arts and self-defense training. The system itself is the product of years of research, tactical analysis, field testing. The tactics and techniques are based on common denominators witnessed by Tom Schrenk through real life assaults apprehending violent convicted criminals.

Tom Schrenk[edit]

Bojuka was founded in 1990 by Tom Schrenk, who, according to his website, has spent over 25 years [3] researching and studying various martial arts techniques. The name is an amalgamation of three specific martial arts, boxing, jujitsu and karate. Also on his site, Schrenk is described as having trained law enforcement and military personnel. his website also holds contact information for 'seminars anywhere in the world' where people can call and schedule lessons.

Schrenk established Bojuka in Ohio in 1990, before opening a studio in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania in 2006.[4]

Training[edit]

Bojuka is not a sport. Bojuka is designed for self-defense against violent street assaults. The focus of the system is on surviving the situation through the use of reasonable force based on threat assessment. Bojuka uses proven reality based self-defense (RBSD) training principles including:

  • natural gross motor skills based movements
  • reflex moves
  • reaction moves
  • muscle memory programming
  • adrenaline stress training
  • vital target striking
  • manipulation
  • domination
  • environmental awareness (including dangers, opportunities for escape and multiple attackers)
  • recycled core movements for unarmed and armed self-defense

Bojuka Skill Levels[edit]

The Bojuka Self Defense System comprises several skill levels, each offering a specific mode of training:

  • Skill Level One - Defensive Hand to Hand Combat: Skill Level One teaches the foundations of the entire Bojuka Self Defense System. Training at this level primarily focuses on unarmed hand to hand combative applications in a defensive mode. Topics include awareness and avoidance, posturing, de-escalation tactics, threat assessment and effective self-defense techniques to end a violent altercation quickly and effectively.
  • Skill Level Two - Offensive Hand to Hand Combat and Weapons Defense: In this skill level, the student will learn tactics to defend unarmed against an assailant armed with a stick, gun, knife or other improvised weapon. The student will also learn to defend themselves in an offensive mode using distractions and preemptive strikes to stop a would-be assailant aggressively before a physical assault is executed. Reality based scenario drills help the student learn to assess a potentially dangerous situation earlier and act rather than react.
  • Skill Level Three - Armed Self Defense Tactics: At this level the student has already become proficient at defending themselves unarmed against any type of assailant or multiple attackers. Skill Level Three focuses on the use of the stick and the knife as self-defense tools. Using the same gross motor skills learned in the earlier skill levels the student learns how to defend themselves defensively and offensively using impact weapons (stick, club, extendable baton) and edged weapons (tactical folding knife both open and close, or fixed blade knife). These armed skills are quickly transferable to weapons of opportunity such as sticks, rolled magazines, pens, etc... that may become available in a high threat situation.
  • Skill Level Four - Instructor Level: Skill Level Four is an instructor certification level. Students must possess a high level of proficiency in the first three skill levels and a demonstrated ability to teach these skills to other individuals. Additional, "professional level" skills are taught, including security and close protection skills, escorting and subject removal techniques, etc... To be certified as a Bojuka Skill Level Four - Certified Instructor, the student must pass the founder's specialized panic attack scenarios.
  • Skill Level Five - Senior Instructor Level: Skill Level Five is another instructor certification level. Promotion to this level is reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional ability as both a practitioner and a teacher. To be certified as a Bojuka Skill Level Five - Certified Senior Instructor, the individual must have taught and promoted his or her own students to Skill Level Four.
