Bollywood- India's other world
Bollywood (" A riff on Hollywood + Bombay, much like other global film markets such as Nollywood and Chinawood"[1]) is the Indian film industry with Indian background. These films represent the largest film industry globally.
In contrast to the Western Hollywood movies the Bollywoods combine a lot of cultural and traditional features, often using Hindu epics for the plot and Hindi as a language.
The film industry reaches back to 1913, when it was established.
Bollywood - just as good as Holy...[edit]
The actors- creating a dream world[edit]
The actors are the heroes of their society, highly respected and absolutely beautiful. The three kans are representatives at the moment. They have to be exceptional dancers and acrobats. In addition the script writers and directors are highly valued.
Storylines of the films[edit]
The plots consist of love, tragedy, tradition, culture, traditional costumes, dreams, wishes, hopes, festivals and religion. It is a dream world in itself, like western musicals. Increasingly they also mention social issues, like feminism and wealth inequality.
Target group[edit]
Wealthy people from the growing Indian middle class, who might be young and middle aged. Sometimes they live and work partly abroad.[4]
Features of the films[edit]
Music and dance[edit]
The Indian movies represent a language of emotions. Songs and dances, sometimes old and traditional, are their central point. There would be six dancers per performance, lasting 5 to 6 minutes each. So the actors are often dancers and acrobats, too. The musical parts are emotional intensifiers, this way kisses and physical contact are substituted and avoided by music, which is often clarifying a situation. The Indians refuse to show body contact- it is considered bad manners.[3]
Costumes[edit]
They are a firework of traditional, elegant fashion, full of colour, gold and glittering. There are masses of jewels and gold- items people are dreaming of.[5]
Bollywood - an international business[edit]
The Bollywood films have a gradual access in the Western world. The main objective of the Bollywoods are entertainment instead of western intellectual, critical thinking. The focus is mostly on emotions- even men do cry dramatically. The films are fairy-tales for the grower ups, coming near to western musicals in character, duration- three hours.
As can be imagined people might be distracted from their own, often poor grown lives. Instead they are left with high hopes for a better life. Surprisingly, younger people in India are extremely optimistic and energetic about their future in contrast to their poor lives. This may be an effect of their films.
