Bombay Bairag

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bombay Bairag is a Mumbai-based music band, founded in 2016.

Bombay Bairag is fronted by A.R. Thakur[1] on vocals, Apurva[2] on female vocals, with Vivek Mayekar on keys, Akhil Sindhwani on bass, Parth Joshi on guitars, and Jignesh Patel on drums.

A.R. Thakur, as the singer-songwriter of the band, writes the lyrics and composes the music. The band does not focus on any specific genre and has composed across genres. Their first album, The Sound of Season 1, was heavily influenced by Indian classical and Sufi traditions. Later compositions draw from a wider range of genres.

The band’s maiden performance was at The Bandra Base, Mumbai[3], and they played to a full house. The concert was a sell-out, leading to another concert at the same venue two weeks later.

Simultaneously, the band released its first single, “The Rain”[4], launched by Hungama. While it received critical acclaim[5], the response from the mainstream music industry was lackluster.

Their big break came when the band was discovered by the music curators of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and given a slot in Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2017. Their performance at KGAF 2017[5] was well-received, and their name gradually gained recognition on the gig circuit.

In the commercial gig circuit, they became well-known through the musical show Music Mojo, which airs on Kappa TV. Bombay Bairag did a series with them featuring a mix of original songs and covers. One of the covers, “Ikk Kudi”[6], became very popular on social media and YouTube.

Since its inception in 2016, the band has performed at over 100 venues[7] and released their album, The Sound of Season 1. Some of the notable venues they have performed at include the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, NIFT Patna, Hard Rock Café[8], Lager & Barrel Festival, Sangeet Natak Akademi, NIT Kurukshetra, IIT Delhi, Rannutsav[5], MTV Flypp,[9] Times Lit Fest, Mood Indigo, IIT Mumbai, and the Hyderabad Literary Festival[10]. They have been featured in Mid-day, The Asian Age[11], and other media outlets[8].

As of June 2018, the band was working on releasing their second album, “Ready for Bollywood”.
