Bonnie Jones

Bonnie Jones is a Korean-American composer, writer, educator and performer. She works primarily with electronics, sound, and text.[1]

Education and career[edit]

Jones obtained a Masters of Fine Arts in Music, Sound and Interdisciplinary Study from the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College in 2012, after having graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Arts in English (honors, 1999).[2]

As an artist, Jones has worked solo or with a variety of collaborators, including Liz Tonne, Andrea Neumann, Chris Cogburn, Joe Foster, Bhob Rainey and Andy Hayleck. She's performed internationally at various venues such as the End Tymes Festival (NYC, 2017), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico, 2016) the Queens Museum (NYC, 2015), VIVO Media Arts (Canada, 2014). She's exhibited at Vox Populi (Philadelphia, 2015 and 2012), the Reverse Gallery (NYC, 2012) and CHELA (Baltimore, 2005), amongst many other galleries. She's been invited as a resident artist at various art institutions including STEIM in 2008 and Elektronmusikstudion EMS in 2014, and was David Tudor artist in residence at Mills College in Oakland for 2016.[3]

Her artworks explore two primary mediums, text and electronic sound, which are sometimes combined, as in And if I live a thousand lives I hope to remember one (2015).[4] In performance, she often uses digital delay pedals whose inputs have been plugged back into their output. She then opens the enclosures and uses 1/8" jacks to probe various parts the the conductive trace on the circuit board, occasionally shorting surrounding traces with her fingers. [5]

As a producer and educator, Jones has co-organized the TECHNE summer workshops with Suzanne Thorpe since 2010.[6] Directed towards young women, TECHNE organizes workshops which introduce experimentation with electronics and other technologies as a way to approach sound. One activity includes the construction of contact microphones, which are then used to amplify the resonances of various objects and develop a group musical improvisation.[7] TECHNE has worked in Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, Oakland, San Diego, and more.[8]
