"Boodhi Kaki" (English: Old Aunty) is a Hindi language famous short story written by the famous Indian author Munshi Premchand[1]. It is considered one of the most famous stories of Premchand. The story is mainly about an old woman 'Boodhi Kaki' who is almost blind and lives with her nephew.
Story
The story is of an old lady 'Boodhi Kaki' who is almost blind and cannot even walk properly. Only one of Boodhi Kaki's relatives is alive now, her nephew Pandit Budhi Ram and his wife Roopa. Boodhi Kaki gives all her property to Buddhiram, only on the condition that he and his family will serve Boodhi Kaki as long as she is alive. Old Kaki loves to eat; this is the only interest of her life. Buddhiram takes all the property of Kaki by promising to take care of her. But, after taking the property, Buddhiram forgets his promise and troubles Kaki. Now Buddhiram and his wife Roopa treat Kaki very badly, and their other sons also treat Kaki badly. There is only one person in the house who has affection for the old aunt, and that is Ladli, the youngest daughter of Buddhiram. One day, a program for the engagement of Buddhiram's eldest son is organized in the house. The house is full of guests and a huge banquet is organized. Boodhi Kaki is sitting alone in her room, and the smell of delicious food reaches her nose. Kaki thinks that till now no one has come to call her; everyone must have gone, and all the food must have been over. She decides to go out and comes out on her knees with increased difficulty. Rupa gets very angry seeing her. Kaki goes to her room and sits down, but due to hunger she cannot wait for the guests to leave and she goes out again. Seeing her, Buddhiram is filled with anger and, holding her hand, drags her to the ground and throws her into the room. No one cares about Auntie’s plight, except Ladli. Ladli secretly hides four or five puris in her basket. Night falls and the ceremony is over, and the old Kaki is sitting in her room in despair when Ladli, after her mother Roopa sleeps, secretly comes to Kaki's room and gives Kaki the puris. Kaki eats the puris, but their hunger is not quenched. Kaki is no longer patient and she goes to the place where the dirty utensils are lying; she picks up the food left by the guests and starts eating it. Just then Roopa comes and, after seeing this scene, regrets what a great crime she has committed. Buddhiram and Roopa regret their actions and give Kaki a full stomach of puris.
