Boost.ai was founded in Stavanger, Norway, in 2016. In an interview, founder Lars Ropeid Selsås stated the company was created to develop conversational AI that could better understand user intent, aiming to move beyond the simpler, rule-based chatbots common at the time.[1] In its first two years, the company reported revenue growth to nearly 39 million Norwegian kroner.[2]
Funding and Ownership
In 2018, the company secured a $5 million Series A funding round from Alliance Venture to support its international expansion.[3]
In 2020, private equity firm Nordic Capital acquired a majority stake, becoming a significant owner. The partnership was aimed at accelerating the company's product development and growth. In 2018, Boost.ai partnered with the Norwegian research organization SINTEF on a project focused on the user-centered design of chatbots for customer loyalty.[9]

According to reporting by Dagens Næringsliv, Boost.ai's first client was the Norwegian bank Sparebank 1 SR-Bank. The company has also provided services to other major Nordic companies, including the telecommunications provider Telenor and the bank DNB.[10] In 2025, the company announced a partnership with the US financial technology provider Jack Henry to supply conversational AI to its network of banks and credit unions.[11]

Boost.ai was Named a "Challenger" in the 2023 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Conversational AI Platforms.[12]
