The Borobudur Marathon, officially the Bank Jateng Borobudur Marathon (BJBM), is an annual marathon held in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia, with the start and finish line at Lumbini Park in the Borobudur Temple complex.[1] First held in its current format in 2017, the event traces its roots to the Borobudur 10K, which was first organized in 1990.[2] In 2025, the marathon was granted Elite Label status by World Athletics, making it one of the most prestigious road running events in Southeast Asia.[1][3]
History
The history of the Borobudur Marathon can be traced back to the Borobudur 10K, an international running event first held in 1990.[2][4] The race was initiated by the then-Chairman of the Indonesian Athletics Association (PASI), Bob Hasan. The 1990 edition featured world-class runners, including Arturo Barrios (Mexico), John Ngugi (Kenya), Addis Abebe (Ethiopia), Kathrin Ullrich (East Germany), and Jill Hunter (England).[2] Abebe won the men's category with a time of 27 minutes 39 seconds, while Ullrich won the women's category in 31 minutes 44 seconds.[2]
The Borobudur 10K was held again in 1991 and 1992, with Abebe winning again in 1991 and Richard Chelimo winning in 1992.[2] However, the event was discontinued after 1992, with the Bob Hasan 10K held in Jakarta in 1993 as a successor.[2]
In 2012, international sporting events returned to Borobudur with the Interhash running event.[2] The modern Borobudur Marathon was first held in its current format in 2017, with a focus on quality over quantity of participants.[2] The event has since grown significantly, with the number of participants increasing from 11,500 in 2025 to a planned 12,500 in 2026.[5] The economic impact of the event has also grown, with the estimated economic turnover increasing from Rp1.5 billion in 2017 to Rp73.9 billion in 2024 and a target of Rp100 billion for 2026.[3][6]
Race details
The Borobudur Marathon is held annually in November at the Borobudur Temple complex in Magelang, Central Java. The event features three race categories: a full marathon (42.195 km), a half marathon (21.1 km), and a 10 km run.[1][7] The 2025 edition introduced a new route, with steep inclines shifted from the later stages of the race (km 35-37) to the midpoint (km 22) to improve runner performance.[8]
The event has grown rapidly since its inception. In 2025, the marathon attracted 11,500 participants from 38 countries.[1] For the 2026 edition, the quota was increased to 12,500 participants, with registration opening on 10 July 2026 through a ballot system.[5] The 2026 event carries the theme "Decade of Legacy".[5]
World Athletics Elite Label
In 2025, the Borobudur Marathon was awarded Elite Label status by World Athletics, placing it among the most prestigious road races globally.[1][3] The Elite Label requires compliance with stringent standards in route measurement, safety, medical services, and elite athlete participation, including inviting at least 12 international elite runners.[1] Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi stated that the recognition makes the Borobudur Marathon a "world-class marathon".[9]
Economic impact
The Borobudur Marathon has been promoted as a key driver of sports tourism and economic growth in the region.[3] In 2024, the event generated an estimated economic turnover of Rp73.9 billion.[3] For the 2025 edition, the economic impact was projected to exceed this figure.[3] The 2026 edition aims to achieve Rp100 billion in economic turnover.[6] These economic benefits flow to local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, homestays, and UMKM (micro, small, and medium enterprises).[3]
