The Boston Metro Baseball League (BMBL) is an amateur baseball league based in the Greater Boston area of Massachusetts. The league describes itself as the largest adult amateur baseball organization in New England,[1] offering wood-bat competition for adults across multiple age divisions. The BMBL traces its origins to 1988 and currently includes 37 teams competing in four divisions.
History
The league was founded in 1988 as the Boston Men’s Baseball League and operated for more than three decades as an affiliate of the Men’s Senior Baseball League / Men’s Adult Baseball League (MSBL/MABL).[1] In 2022, the league ended its affiliation with MSBL/MABL and adopted the name Boston Metro Baseball League. The change reflected two organizational priorities: expanding beyond Boston into the wider metropolitan region and recognizing the league’s longstanding inclusion of players regardless of gender.[1]
Divisions
As of the 2025 season, the league is organized into four age divisions:[1]
18+ Division
Teams play a 24-game regular season, primarily on Sundays with occasional weeknight games. Most games are held at fields in and around Boston. Wood bats are mandatory.
28+ Boston Division
The division features a 22-game season with games usually held on Sundays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. Players primarily reside in the eastern Massachusetts region.
28+ MetroWest Division
This division includes teams located west of Boston, generally near or beyond Route 495. The regular season consists of 18 games, commonly played on Sunday mornings.
38+ Masters Division
Designed for older players, the Masters Division plays an 18-game schedule with contests typically held on Monday evenings.
Tournaments and Participation
Although no longer affiliated with MSBL/MABL, many BMBL teams compete in a variety of regional and national amateur baseball tournaments, including:
- MSBL/MABL Holiday Classic (Orlando)
- MSBL/MABL Kickoff Classic (Las Vegas)
- MSBL/MABL World Series (Arizona)
- MSBL/MABL Fall Classic (Florida)
- Roy Hobbs World Series (Fort Myers)
- Cooperstown Classic (New York)
- Cape Cod Classic (Massachusetts)
These tournaments provide opportunities for BMBL teams to participate in additional competitive play beyond the local season.
Organization
The league is overseen by a Board that includes a President, divisional Commissioners, a Treasurer, Umpire Chief, VP of Marketing & Baseball Operations, Webmaster/Social Media Manager, and additional administrative roles.[1]
