Bottlecap Press is a Midwestern independent publishing company that specializes in poetry and short fiction.
Created in 2014, works it has published have been featured in, among others, Dazed, Forbes, New York Magazine, The New York Times, NME, Nylon, Poets & Writers, Vogue, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.[1].
History[edit]
Bottlecap Press was founded in 2014 by Craig "C.A." Mullins. In a 2016 interview with Fanzine, Mullins explained the press takes its name from a bottle cap he found on a park bench in 2013[2]. In the same interview he stated that he created Bottlecap as a means for writers to get fair royalties when publishing their works, citing a period of time in which he decided to self-publish his works after multiple unsuccessful book deals.
The press aims to allowing authors more creative control over their works by being “the ones working for the authors, not the other way around".[3] It prioritizes author's rights and fair pay[4].
As of 2023, the publishing house's staff includes Editor-in-Chief C.A. Mullins and editor & project manager Julia Mullins[5]
Publishing work[edit]
Mullins has described Bottlecap Press as publishing a "diverse range of books, even if some of them might be esoteric".[2]. The books the press publishes are handprinted, and it aims to publish "one to two chapbooks and full-length books of poetry and fiction every month"[3]
Works the press has published include:
- Ajebota by Precious Okoyomon
- But I'm a Painter by Shamir Bailey
- Acid in Georgia by Jasmine Ledesma
- Harmattan by Adaeze Elechi
