Bow riding

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bow riding is similar to wake riding and logging; it refers to a form of play within the dolphin species or members of the smaller whale species, riding in the bow wave of a boat. They ride the waves produced by the bow of a boat or vessel. They position themselves in a way to be pushed and picked up by the force [1] of the wave.

The dolphin is pushed by the pressure of the boat and surfs the waves created; they move in and out of the waves in groups to get the best ride. It is considered a recreational behavior for these animals. Dolphins have been known to twist, turn, leap, and swim while surfing the waves made [2]

The Greeks first saw Bottle-nose, Common, and Striped dolphins bow riding in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea. Bow Riding is mood-dependent; dolphins will not ride a bow ride if they have not been fed in a while, but are eager to bow ride after a social or sexual activity. Dolphins will only approach a vessel or ship of 20 m long or larger to bow ride. Bow riding can be dangerous for dolphins, as their risk to be captured [3] by humans.
