James Bradley Harold Burton (born 6 February 1973) is an English entrepreneur and motivational speaker who founded the business networking group 4Networking.[1][2][3] He is the author of four business books.[3][4][5]

Early life[edit]

Burton was born in Salford, Greater Manchester,[6] and stayed in this area throughout his childhood and school years.[5]

He claims that someone tried to shoot him in 1995. This has never been proven. [7]

Career[edit]

After leaving school, Burton entered the computer games industry, eventually becoming a commentator on Channel 4's computer games show, Gamesmaster.

In 2004, Burton started a marketing business in London, financing the company by delivering pizzas.[4][8] In 2006, Burton shut down his marketing business and set up 4Networking in Taunton, Somerset,[4][5] a business networking company.[2][5]

In 2009, Burton self-published his first business book, Get Off Your Arse,[4] This was followed by Get Off Your Arse Too in 2011,[3][5] also published by Burton. A third book, Life. Business. Just Got Easier. was published in 2013 by Capstone (part of Wiley). A fourth book, Now What?, was self-published in 2016. Burton also wrote the foreword to Business Networking For Dummies by Stefan Thomas, former Network Director of 4Networking.[9]

From 2009 Burton proclaimed himself as the UK's No 1 motivational speaker.[10][11][12]

In January 2013 Burton was on BBC Newsnight discussing his opinion on Europe increasingly putting in legislation that ties small businesses down.[13]

In February 2016, Burton stood down as managing director of 4Networking.[14] His replacement was childhood friend Jason Dutton. Dutton eventually left that role when Burton's interference made it impossible for him to move the organisation forward.

Burton also gives talks as a motivational speaker across the UK,[15][16][17] and is an ambassador for Visit Somerset, which aims to promote Somerset as a destination for travel and business.[18]

In April 2017 Burton ran the first Now What Live event in Reading[19] alongside a number of other speakers such as Paul Bohill, an enforcement officer from Can't Pay We'll Take it Away now hosting two events a year, with an average attendance under 100.

14 November 2019 Burton was keynote speaker at the International Xerocon conference [20]

In 2019, Burton bragged that 4Networking Limited had achieved turnover in excess of £2 million annually

In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, Burton quietly formed 4Networking Online Limited and began moving assets away from 4Networking Limited.

In July 2022, Burton sold his 51% share of 4Networking Online Limited for between £35,000-£50,000.

In October 2022 Burton began insolvency proceedings at 4Networking Limited

Media[edit]

Burton has been interviewed about business and entrepreneurship, with appearances on Working Lunch[21] on BBC2, BBC Newsnight [13] The Jeremy Vine Show [22] on BBC Radio 2, various appearances on London Real[23] and articles in newspapers The Times,[1][2] and The Guardian,[3] business magazines,[24] business websites, and local newspapers.[25] He has also created several motivational videos and podcasts for entrepreneurial and business websites. Burton was listed by Richtopia as one of the 100 most influential British entrepreneurs.[26]

In 2015 Burton appeared as one of the backers in an episode of the TV series Money Pit on Dave.[27][28] He paid £5000 to be on the show

Personal life[edit]

Burton lives in Taunton, Somerset with his wife Kerry and their two sons and one daughter.[4]

He also has an adult son from another relationship

Burton speaks about twice being addicted to drugs before turning life around.[29]
