Brad Luke is an Australian politician located in the City of Newcastle. He has been a Councillor on Newcastle Council since 2008 [1] and served as Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle for 2 years [2] before an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry led to the incumbent Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy’s resignation [3] making Brad Luke the Acting Lord Mayor of Newcastle [4] until a by-election could be held on 15 November 2014. [5]
Brad Luke is also a financial planner by trade. [6]
2014 Mayoral By-Election
After an ICAC inquiry forced Jeff McCloy to resign, the Liberal Party announced that it wouldn't be endorsing candidates at all of the subsequent by-elections as an "act of atonement". [7] This resulted in Brad Luke announcing that he would run as an Independent for Lord Mayor and resign his position as President of the local Liberal Party Branch. [8] This attracted criticism from opponents who accused him of "hoodwinking" voters [9] by making it unclear where his political allegiances stood by not also resigning from the Liberal party.
Brad Luke's campaign focused on the financial position of council saying at a candidates forum "council is a $220 million per annum enterprise that needed a financially competent leader." citing "council's budget deficit had reduced from $29 million to $6 million." however, opponents criticised Luke for a lack of integrity saying that "the Liberal Party must think so poorly of that particular candidate that they won't even endorse him to run for lord mayor" [10]
The election was held on Saturday 15 November 2014.
