BreakThrough News is a 501(c)3 media organization which describes itself as a news source that “tell[s] the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities — because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is.”[1] The organization was founded in January 2020 by New York City-based journalists Ben Becker and Eugene Puryear.
Background
The organization produces several programs including “Dispatches”, “The Freedom Side”, “The Socialist Program” and “The Punch Out” hosted by notable journalists Rania Khalek, Eugene Puryear and Brian Becker respectively. BreakThrough News hosts international activists and experts to discuss national and international issues through an anti-capitalist and leftist lens.[2]
Notable coverage
BreakThrough News traveled to Ethiopia to cover the #NoMore Movement. Their eye-witness coverage received recognition from Ethiopian activists,[3] in addition to their interview with former Ethiopian ambassador Mohammed Hassan.[4]
Their analyses of the 2022 military invasion of Ukraine was quoted by Glamour UK as "aid[ing] understanding of the conflict."[5] Renowned Marxist economist Prabhat Patnaik called their discussion of imperialism the "quintessential starting point for the next generation of activists and organizers."[6]
