The Brechthaus in Augsburg is Bertolt Brecht’s birthplace, now a museum and memorial.
Building history
Bertolt Brecht was born on February 10, 1898, in a typical craftsman's house at Auf dem Rain 7 in Augsburg's Lechviertel borough.
Brecht lived in the house briefly, as his parents moved out in 1900. He grew up at Bleichgasse 2 in Augsburg. Despite this, his birthplace was chosen for the museum due to its symbolic value and an existing plaque, installed in 1960 through a private initiative.
Augsburg’s process to honor Brecht with a memorial took time. After acquiring his house, the city spent nearly eight years planning and another two years renovating. The Brecht House was opened as a museum and memorial in 1985.
