Brent Copstead
Brent Copstead is an American winemaker and entrepreneur. He is the founder and owner of Geneva Winery, a winery with tasting rooms in Geneva, Illinois and Batavia, Illinois, and a production facility and farm in Elburn, Illinois.[1]
Early life and career
Copstead originally from Washington State and moved to the Chicago area in 2014.[2] Prior to entering the wine industry, he worked as a marketing executive.[3] His interest in winemaking began in 2014 after visiting a homebrew shop in St. Charles, Illinois, where he tasted homemade wine and subsequently started making wine from kits as a hobby.[1][2]
Geneva Winery
Copstead opened the first Geneva Winery tasting room in downtown Geneva, Illinois, at 426 S. Third Street in fall 2020.[1] The business expanded in September 2023 with the opening of Geneva Winery Bistro & Wine Bar at 407 S. Third Street.[4] In April 2024, a third location opened in Batavia at 5 N. River Street, featuring an event space overlooking the Fox River.[1][5]
In 2022, Copstead and his wife Laura purchased a 113-year-old farm on Brundige Road in unincorporated Kane County, Illinois, outside Elburn, where they established a small manufacturing operation.[2] The winery produces over 50 different wine varieties, primarily using purchased grape juices from regions including California, France, Germany, Australia, and Chile.[3][1] As of 2025, Copstead was expanding production capacity with a leased warehouse in Elburn and had plans to plant a vineyard at the Brundige Road property.[2]
Copstead has described the winery's approach as creating a "little wine community," aiming to provide a casual, community-oriented experience similar to a microbrewery.[2][1]
Personal life
Copstead resides in St. Charles, Illinois, with his wife Laura.[1][2] He is involved in local community activities and has been a supporter of local causes.[6]
