Brett Phillips (born December 27, 1968) is an American former soccer and futsal goalkeeper. He competed professionally in the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and played extensively in U.S. indoor leagues with clubs including the Harrisburg Heat, Las Vegas Dustdevils, Kansas City Attack, Portland Pythons, St. Louis Steamers, Baltimore Blast, and Milwaukee Wave.[1][2] He also represented the United States futsal team at major international tournaments, including the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship and the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship.[3][4]
College career
Phillips played college soccer at Old Dominion University, where he earned All-Colonial Athletic Association and All-South Atlantic Region honors in 1991.[1] Old Dominion's 2003 men's soccer media guide lists him among the program's all-state selections for that season.[5]
Club career
Tampa Bay Rowdies
Phillips signed with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the APSL after college. Contemporary reporting in the Tampa Bay Times noted that he became the club's starting goalkeeper in 1993 and recorded a league-leading 0.92 goals-against average.[2]
Indoor soccer
Phillips spent the majority of his professional career in indoor leagues, including the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL), Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL), World Indoor Soccer League (WISL), and the second Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). His career received regional and national newspaper coverage, including profiles in the Virginian-Pilot and mentions in Howler magazine's retrospective on American indoor soccer.[1][6]
He was named NPSL Rookie of the Year with the Harrisburg Heat in 1992–93,[7] won the CISL championship with the Las Vegas Dustdevils in 1994,[8] and was selected WISL Goalkeeper of the Year in 1999 with the Portland Pythons.[9] Phillips later earned MISL Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2005–06 while playing for the St. Louis Steamers.[10]
Futsal career
Phillips earned 20 caps for the United States futsal team, according to the National Soccer Hall of Fame's veterans eligibility list.[11] He was part of the U.S. squad that won the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship in Costa Rica, where he was recognized as the tournament's top goalkeeper.[3] The championship qualified the United States for the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship in Taiwan, where Phillips appeared as one of the team's goalkeepers.[4]
Phillips also competed for the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games futsal tournament in Rio de Janeiro, as confirmed by coverage in Soccer America and FutsalPlanet.[12][13]
