Brett Vesel is an American football coach who is the head football coach at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minnesota. Hired in 2026, Vesel entered his first collegiate head coaching position after more than four decades of coaching football, including 30 seasons as a high school head coach in Minnesota and Wisconsin.[1]

Playing career

A native of Duluth, Minnesota, Vesel began his collegiate playing career at Minnesota North College – Vermilion, where he played fullback under Hall of Fame head coach Rudy Semeja. During his two seasons with the Ironmen, he earned All-Region XIII honors.[2]

Following his time at Vermilion, Vesel transferred to the University of Wisconsin–Superior, where he played under Gil Krueger. After beginning his career at fullback, he transitioned to offensive guard and earned honorable mention all-conference honors.[2]

Coaching career

Early coaching

Vesel began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Minnesota North College – Vermilion in 1983 before returning to the program in 1988. Between those stints, he played collegiately at Wisconsin–Superior. In 1989, he joined Stewart High School in Minnesota as an assistant coach.[2]

High school coaching

In 1990, Vesel accepted his first head coaching position at Carlton High School in Minnesota. During his six seasons with the Bulldogs, he guided the program to the only state tournament appearance in school history.[2]

Following Carlton, Vesel spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Superior High School in Wisconsin before becoming head coach at Logan High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1999. In his final season with the Rangers, he led the program to the Wisconsin state quarterfinals, the deepest playoff run in school history at the time. The achievement stood as the program's best postseason finish for the next 12 years.[2]

Vesel became head coach at Superior High School in 2001, where he remained through the 2005 season. During 2006, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Minnesota Duluth before accepting the head coaching position at La Crescent High School later that year.[2]

At La Crescent, Vesel led the Lancers to the most successful period in school history, including a school-record 9–2 season and two appearances in the section championship game.[2]

In 2012, Vesel became head coach at Austin High School, where he spent 14 seasons before returning to the collegiate ranks.[2]

Central Lakes College

On April 7, 2026, Central Lakes College announced Vesel as the next head football coach of the Raiders. He entered his first collegiate head coaching position after 40 years of coaching football and 30 years as a high school head coach.[3]

Personal life

Vesel and his wife, Gerilyn, have five children and eight grandchildren. Their son, Isaac ("Ike"), played football at the University of Minnesota Duluth and later became head football coach at Melrose High School in Minnesota. Their daughter Alexandria has competed in women's basketball at Central Lakes College.[2]

In addition to football, Vesel has coached wrestling, boys' and girls' track and field, girls' basketball, girls' hockey, and girls' flag football during his coaching career.[2]
