Brian Otis is an American engineer, academic and entrepreneur best known for co-founding Verily and serving as CTO from inception until 2020.[1][2] While serving as CTO, he helped Verily raise over $1B. [3] Prior to starting Verily, he was an early member of Google X where he co-founded and led the smart contact lens program in 2014. [4]
Otis received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1999, and then received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2005 under the advisement of Dr. Jan Rabaey. He started as an assistant professor at the University of Washington in 2005 and served part time until 2018 while working at Google X and starting Verily. [5]
